Houston Community Celebration

Houston Community Celebration

Houston is known for its oil, petrochemical and technology industries. But it’s also a railroad town with a rich transportation history.

In 1850, the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway started as the first railroad in Texas. It ran from Harrisburg (now part of Houston) to the Brazos River, opening the door for an intricate network of lines, once part of Southern Pacific Railroad. Today the Union Pacific lines serve the Port of Houston, Galveston and main lines running in all directions.

Union Pacific is proud to celebrate its 150th Anniversary in Houston, Oct. 27-28, to highlight the city’s historical railroad legacy.

Locomotive No. 844, the last steam engine built for the railroad, will be on display along with the Promontory, a 1962-vintage baggage car transformed into a state-of-the-art traveling exhibit. The Promontory allows visitors to interact with history via a 65-inch video touch screen highlighting many of the communities the car will be visiting in 2012.

Visitors also will be able to see UP’s mini-train, considered its most popular Goodwill Ambassador, and take advantage of free giveaways, such as coloring books.

Free parking is available at the Houston Permitting Center, 1002 Washington Ave., and the surface lot located on the west side of the downtown U.S. Post Office, 401 Franklin St.

Join Union Pacific, state and city officials on Friday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m., as the railroad proclaims Houston an official Union Pacific train town and the city honors Union Pacific's 150th Anniversary.
