Stories

Joe Bower, the Butcher

by Edith Brophy

This is a story that I grew up hearing about my Great-grandfather, Joseph Bower. He is said to have left his family in England to come to the West to work with Buffalo Bill in about 1866.

Buffalo Bill [William Cody] was hired by the Kansas-Pacific Railroad when it was being built to provide buffalo meat for the Irish workers. Joseph Bower did the butchering of the buffalo meat for the railroad. Eventually he returned to his family in England.

My grandparents told of going to see Buffalo Bill's show when it toured England because of the family connection to Buffalo Bill. This is a great story and I would love to obtain some proof that it is authentic.

The Kansas-Pacific later became part of the Union-Pacific Railroad.
