After David Moffat’s death (Moffat County’s namesake), the rail line he began in Denver finally made it to Craig, Colo., in the
Craig Train Town presentation. Mayor Terry Carwile is holding the sign. Also pictured are Councilman Ray Beck and Craig Chamber President Christina Oxley.
The first passenger train pulled into Craig in November 1913. Until the rail came to Craig, because of its remoteness it was very difficult for residents to get goods from the outside world. Rail provided easier access to commerce and travel as well as a way to transport local commodities to the other side of the mountains.
Of course now it is vital to exporting our coal out of the Yampa Valley.
